OVERWHELMING is designed and developed by the team I led at RoboticPlus.AI, it intergraded with computational design, iterative algorithm, robotic fabrication, interactive installation.
The word “overwhelming” originally refers to the sense of flooding, the momentum that cannot be stopped, which is comparable to the magnificent sea wave. Benefitted from robotic fabrication techniques, this wavy installation has a rolling and highly fluid appearance. The immersive watery space is created with the integration of interactive lighting effects, giving us opportunities to think about all these occurrences of confrontation, interaction and enlightenment arising from encounters.
With the parametric design methods and physical simulation, numerous geometries with distinguishing features were generated. But we still can read the underlying relationship among all of them.
OVERWHELMING was divided into 36 pieces to build, each component has unique geometry with delicate details and patterns. Relying on the self-developing 3d printing end effector at RoboticPlus.AI, we spend 200 hours to finish the print.
OVERWHELMING was exhibited in Shanghai Urban Space Art Season (SUSAS) 2019, then it was showcased in TANK SHANGHAI.
